Biographical Note

Barbara Rose was born in 1916 in Montreal. She took her bachelor’s degree and MD at McGill University, and served in the Canadian Navy as a surgeon lieutenant during World War II, one of only seven women to do so.

While serving a residency in internal medicine after the war, she met and married a U.S. flight surgeon. They moved to Delaware in 1951, where Dr. Rose became active in the field of public health. She was director of New Castle County Health Services, and in 1977 she became the first woman to be president of the Delaware Division of Public Health. She held this post for four years, winning praise from Governor Pierre S. DuPont for her commitment and dedication.

Dr. Rose was also a talented artist and a member of Wilmington’s Studio Group, a society of local artists founded in 1935. She passed away in 2002.
