From the Desk of…
Tim Gibbs
Executive Director |
Greetings,
As the fall season approaches, so does the start of many collaborative educational events. These events are designed to advance professional knowledge and competency, stimulate the mind, and ignite interest in the historical context of medicine and healthcare.
Elsewhere on this page is a partial list of events including our TopTen Clinical Pearls Series operated in partnership with the Delaware Academy of Family Physicians , our "Live from the College" Series operated in partnership with The College of Physicians of Philadelphia , and conferences and symposia offered in collaboration with our partners at Christiana Care Health System and at Nemours .
On behalf of the Board of Directors, I hope you'll be able to attend one or more of these events, and that you will consider becoming a member of the Delaware Academy of Medicine, or renewing your membership if it has lapsed.
Editor's note: “From the Desk of…” is a new section where Board President Dr. Christopher Casscells and Executive Director Tim Gibbs will periodically articulate vision and respond to current issues.

Academy and Christiana Care Academic Affairs partner with MedicusCME to further physician professional development at Christiana Care and into the community.
The Delaware Academy of Medicine and Christiana Care have raised the bar in professional development through a new collaborative partnership with MedicusCME. This partnership creates the Christiana Care Office of Continuing Physician Professional Development (CPPD).
Led by Carol Pashman, MedicusCME now shares offices with the Academy on the ground floor of the John H. Ammon Medical Education Center on the Christiana Hospital campus. Academy and MedicusCME staff work together with Christiana Care and other healthcare entities to deliver outstanding programming to our community.
Medicus's unique expertise in the CME process and its ability to address the evermore stringent requirements for accredited activities are necessary components for both the educational programming of the Delaware Academy of Medicine and Christiana Care. Additionally, MedicusCME and the Academy share very similar missions in their commitment to the academic advancement of healthcare professionals.
Brian W. Little, M.D., PhD., Christiana Care's chief academic officer, says, “The health system has long understood the importance of continuing physician and healthcare provider professional development, but until now, has not had a formal office within the system to accomplish this. Shared interest in physician, community and public education make partnering with the Academy and MedicusCME for creation of the Christiana Office of Continuing Physician Professional Development a prudent move. Excellent work has always been done by individual departments, but having a centralized structure allows us to build better programs, avoid duplication, and know we're scheduling things reasonably and rationally throughout the year.”
“We are not here to reinvent the wheel. We are simply formalizing the look and feel of programs already in progress here at the Academy of Medicine and Christiana Care. Introducing new programs that will increase visibility for the Academy and Christiana Care and take us to the next level in professional education,” explains Tim Gibbs, executive director of the Academy.
“I believe this partnership will result in better, more relevant continuing education for not only physicians, but all healthcare professionals in the community,” adds Dr. Little.
Academy of Medicine Awards $100,000 in student loans
The Academy is proud to announce that it has awarded over $100,000 in financial aid to 20 Delaware students studying medicine and dentistry in 2010.
“As the national economy struggles to recover, loans are increasingly difficult to find,” says program chair Cynthia Gabrielli D.O., F.A.A.P. “Small loans such as those provided by the Academy help students complete their education without undue financial hardship.”
To make repayment easier, the Academy offers 5- and 10-year repayment options for awardees. The loan repayment period begins one year after the student's graduation. Beginning in 2011, past recipients will be able to make loan payments and track their balances through the Academy website.
