Omar A. Khan, MD, MHS, FAAFP

President and Advisory Council President

Dr. Khan serves as President & CEO of the Delaware Health Sciences Alliance (DHSA), a consortium of Christiana Care Health System, Thomas Jefferson University, Nemours, and the University of Delaware.   He is also the Physician Leader for Academic Programs & Partnerships at Christiana Care, and Associate Professor of Family & Community Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University.  He serves as co-Director for Community Engagement & Outreach for ACCEL, the Delaware Clinical & Translational Research program.

He is also a practicing physician with particular interests in general primary care, medical education, outcomes research infrastructure, and global health.

He has previously served as Associate Vice Chair for the Department of Family & Community Medicine, and Medical Director of the Eugene du Pont Preventive Medicine & Rehabilitation Institute, both at Christiana Care.  Since 2013 he has served as Co-Director of the Global Health Curriculum at CCHS and the GH Residency Track in Family & Community Medicine.  Since 2006 he has held appointments to the Medical-Dental Staff of Christiana Care and Nemours/AI DuPont Hospital for Children.

Dr. Khan is a graduate of Wilmington Friends School, received his BA and MA from the University of Pennsylvania, MD and residency from the University of Vermont, and public health degree from the Johns Hopkins University. He also completed a mini-fellowship in Geriatrics from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

He has previously served on the faculty of the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health and the University of Vermont College of Medicine, where he founded and directed the Global Health electives in the Dept. of Family Medicine.

Dr. Khan has authored over 80 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, and is part of the referee panel for a variety of academic journals, including JAMA, the American Journal of Public Health, American Family Physician, the British Medical Journal and others. He has authored chapters in leading textbooks including 5 Minute Clinical Consult and ePocrates, and co-authored 4 books in the area of global health, including ‘Readings in Global Health’, ‘The End of Polio?’, and ‘Megacities & Global Health’.

Dr. Khan has been named as a ‘Top Doc’ by Philadelphia magazine; received the Recent Alumnus of the Year award from Wilmington Friends School; Alumnus of the Year award and Teacher of the Year award from the University of Vermont; the AAFP/Pfizer Teaching Development Award; the Executive Director’s Citation from the APHA; Leonard F. Tow Humanism in Medicine Award from the Arnold F. Gold Foundation; Service to Medicine award from the University of Vermont College of Medicine; Editor of the Year award by BioMedCentral; and Outstanding Service Award, Section of International Health, APHA.

He has served as president of the Delaware Academy of Family Physicians; is currently on the board of trustees for Christiana Care Health System; and has served as Chair of the Science Board and Member of the Executive Board for APHA.   He is Past-Chair for International Health for the APHA, Committee member of the Board of the Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH), and the first President of the newly re-formed Delaware Public Health Association.
