Erin Kavanaugh, MD, FAAFP, is a practicing family physician, Delaware native and DIMER program graduate. She has a passion for complex chronic disease management in underserved settings.
Dr. Kavanaugh earned her undergraduate degree in biology at Pennsylvania State University in 2003. She completed her medical education at the Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia in 2007. She completed her family medicine residency at Christiana Care’s family medicine residency program in 2010, where she served as chief resident.
In April 2016, Dr. Kavanaugh was named the residency program director for family medicine and co-program director for emergency medicine/family medicine. In January 2019, Dr Kavanaugh was appointed Vice Chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine. In July 2023, Dr Kavanaugh was promoted to Chair, Department of Family and Community Medicine and Physician Executive, Complex and Community Medicine.
Dr. Kavanaugh is a clinical associate professor of family and community medicine at Sidney Kimmel Medical College. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians and proud past president of the Delaware Academy of Family Physicians. She has been awarded the Bronze and Silver Program Director’s Awards by the Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors in 2018 and 2022, respectively. She has received a variety of system, state, and regional awards for her commitment to excellence in education, including Attending of the Year, DAFP President’s award and the Dean’s Award from Sidney Kimmel Medical College. She values mentorship and has been an AAFP Foundation mentor for multiple cycles of the Family Medicine LEADS program, and recently completed the Association of Departments of Family Medicine LEADS Fellowship program.
