As the nation prepares for another transition in leadership, we echo and support the sentiments shared by APHA Executive Director Georges C. Benjamin, MD. Elections mark pivotal moments, bringing potential shifts in policy direction that can impact the public’s health. Dr. Benjamin acknowledges both the opportunities and challenges such changes may bring, emphasizing APHA’s unwavering dedication to advancing evidence- and science-based policies that prioritize the well-being of all Americans.
At the Delaware Academy of Medicine | Delaware Public Health Association, we recognize the significance of collaboration in achieving these goals. As Dr. Benjamin stated, “The American public wants, and deserves, clean air and water, access to care, reproductive health, and so much more of what we advocate for.” In Delaware, we share in the mission to promote these essential aspects of health by engaging with community leaders, policymakers, local health practitioners, and public health advocates who envision a healthier future for all residents.
Dr. Benjamin also made it clear that despite anticipated policy changes, APHA’s values and priorities will remain steadfast: “We reject the idea that the values, perspectives and guidance we have articulated for many years are wrong and that we should back off.” In Delaware, we stand firmly by this message. We remain committed to championing policies and programs that ensure optimal health regardless of race, ethnicity, gender identity, age, economic status, or geographic location.
With the United States currently facing some of the most challenging health outcomes among industrialized nations, we join APHA in the urgent call for strong, decisive leadership in public health. We know that public health progress requires resilience, advocacy, and collective action—principles that guide our organization every day.
To our members, we extend our gratitude for your involvement and support. If you are not yet part of this critical work, we invite you to join us. As Dr. Benjamin so aptly put it, “The future of America’s health is in your hands.” Together, we can continue advocating for a healthier, more equitable future for Delaware and beyond.
